Review: Saxony Open College Blitz Chess Championship in Freiberg
A packed house and fast-paced games at the University of Freiberg: At this year’s Saxon College Blitz Chess Championship, numerous college students and strong guest players competed for the top spots in 13 rounds of blitz chess (3+2 format).
Florian Wentzel (Chemnitz University of Technology / TV 1887 Germania Hermsdorf) secured the overall victory and the title of 2026 Saxon University Champion, ahead of Lazaro Garcia del Real Artero (Freiberg University of Applied Sciences / TV Freiberg 1844) in second place and Dr. Marco Ragni (Chemnitz University of Technology) in third.
In the women’s division, Fatemeh from TU Dresden claimed the title of strongest female player. In the junior division, Julius emerged as the top U16 player.
In the usual pleasant and friendly atmosphere, arbiter Burkhard Atze skillfully guided the tournament through all rounds and consistently handled rule questions with expertise. We would like to thank all participants as well as the university for the excellent conditions!
