Silver medal for TU Bergakademie Freiberg at the Saxon University Championship 2025 in basketball

On Saturday, May 24, 2025, the Saxon University Championship in men's basketball was held in the Mittweida sports hall. An international team from TU Bergakademie Freiberg took part, consisting of players from Mongolia, India, Ecuador and Germany - for many it was their first tournament ever.
The game was played in "everyone against everyone" league mode. The Freiberg team went into the tournament as underdogs: they had never managed to beat the teams from Dresden or Leipzig before. However, the team sprung a surprise in the very first game and made a clear statement with a commanding 44:14 victory against TU Dresden.
The tournament victory deservedly went to the host team from Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, who won all their games by a clear margin.
The battle for the other podium places was exciting. TU Bergakademie Freiberg, TU Chemnitz and HTWK Leipzig fought a close race for silver and bronze. After a narrow defeat against Chemnitz, Freiberg initially slipped out of the medal ranks and had to find new motivation.
In the final match against Leipzig, everything was at stake: only a clear victory could secure second place for TU Bergakademie. In an impressive team performance, they managed to do just that - with a result that made even the sports management think twice. The surprise was perfect: silver for the silver city of Freiberg.
